Technical decisions

Optical Transceiver Temperature Classes

Ambient temperature is not module-case temperature; select from the measured thermal envelope and the exact datasheet limit.

Commercial optics are commonly specified around 0–70°C and industrial optics often around −40–85°C, but “extended” ranges vary. Those shorthand bands must never override the actual operating and storage ratings.

High-density ports can heat a module above room ambient. Thermal qualification therefore combines worst-case inlet temperature, neighbouring modules, airflow direction, cage design, power class and telemetry.

MingApex coordinates China-based sourcing, OEM execution and independent quality-control evidence. It is not presented as the product manufacturer or an accredited laboratory; supplier identity, method and evidence boundary remain explicit.

01 / Decision inputs

Freeze the variables before comparing options

Define the installed thermal envelope, not a climate-zone label.

Required input What to record How it changes the decision
Case range Required module-case minimum/maximum Directly selects the qualified range.
Ambient profile Seasonal inlet and enclosure temperature Sets the thermal source condition.
Host airflow Direction, velocity and blocked-path cases Determines heat removal.
Port density Neighbouring optics and cage occupancy Creates local hot spots.
Power class Worst-case module draw and host limit Higher power reduces margin.
Environment Altitude, solar load, dust and humidity Changes cooling and ageing.
Lifecycle Cold start, thermal cycles and service years Extends qualification beyond steady state.
02 / Engineering comparison

Compare on measurable engineering criteria

Test the exact module in the worst credible host condition.

01

Datasheet trace

Record operating, storage and warning limits by revision.

02

Thermal map

Measure case/DOM temperature at representative port density.

03

Cold/hot function

Check recognition, DOM, power and traffic across the range.

04

Derating

Apply vendor limits for altitude, airflow or high power.

05

Recovery

Verify alarms and traffic after thermal excursions.

03 / Product anchors

Live product examples for a controlled starting point

These live SKUs anchor the physical family. Suitability still depends on the documented host, fibre path and validation scope.

A product page is a starting specification, not universal compatibility or lot-acceptance evidence.

04 / Decision patterns

Choose by evidence, not shorthand

Select the narrowest class that safely covers the measured envelope with margin.

Preferred path

Approve when the exact sample stays within datasheet limits and passes link/traffic tests across the documented thermal profile.

Conditional path

An extended or industrial label is conditional until its actual range, components and host derating are documented.

Stop and redesign

Stop when required case temperature exceeds the module or host limit, even if room ambient appears acceptable.

Revalidation trigger

Revalidate any host, airflow, port density, power class, supplier BOM, firmware, enclosure or environmental change.

05 / Validation path

From requirement lock to approved order line

Use traceable temperature points and retain DOM plus external measurements.

  1. 1

    Freeze the requirement

Record the exact host, port, data rate, reach, fibre path and commercial scope for Temperature classes.

  2. 2

    Compare complete architectures

Include optics, fibre, connectors, power, cooling, software and operational constraints—not only unit price.

  3. 3

    Define measurable acceptance

Set loss, telemetry, link, error, traffic and documentation criteria before selecting the sample.

  4. 4

    Validate the named configuration

Test the serialized sample on the recorded setup and close deviations with an owner and deadline.

  5. 5

    Bridge approval to production

Match the approved identity, revision, coding and critical attributes to the production lot and repeat order.

06 / Risk control

Failure modes that invalidate the decision

Ambient substitution

Room temperature is treated as module-case temperature.

Class shorthand

“Industrial” is accepted without exact limits.

Sparse-port test

One module is tested in an empty chassis.

Silent BOM drift

Thermal components change after approval.

08 / Buyer questions

Guide-specific questions

What does this guide decide?

Any class label is subordinate to the exact supplier datasheet, host airflow, port density, module power, altitude, solar load and serialized-sample result.

What must the buyer provide?

Provide required case/ambient range, host/cage, airflow, port density, altitude, enclosure and expected service profile.

When is the preferred path conditional?

An extended or industrial label is conditional until its actual range, components and host derating are documented.

What must be revalidated?

Revalidate any host, airflow, port density, power class, supplier BOM, firmware, enclosure or environmental change.

Controlled next step

Qualify the real thermal envelope.

Send host density, airflow, temperature range and module power constraints for a bounded thermal validation plan.
