Optical Link-Budget Calculation Guide

A valid link budget proves both sensitivity margin and overload protection under worst-case conditions.

The low-power case starts with minimum transmitter output and subtracts worst-case channel loss plus engineering margin. The result must remain above receiver sensitivity or the required stressed sensitivity limit.

The high-power case starts with maximum transmitter output and subtracts minimum channel loss. The result must remain below receiver overload; short ER or amplified paths may require engineered attenuation.

MingApex coordinates China-based sourcing, OEM execution and independent quality-control evidence. It is not presented as the product manufacturer or an accredited laboratory; supplier identity, method and evidence boundary remain explicit.

01 / Decision inputs

Freeze the variables before comparing options

Use worst-case values and a traceable loss inventory, not typical numbers.

Required input What to record How it changes the decision
Transmitter limits Minimum and maximum output at operating conditions Defines both low- and high-power cases.
Receiver limits Sensitivity/stressed limit and overload Creates the permitted receive window.
Fibre attenuation Length × wavelength/temperature-specific coefficient Fibre loss changes with route and wavelength.
Connector loss Count × qualified maximum per mated pair Dirty or poor pairs can exceed assumptions.
Splice/passive loss Splices, splitters, MUX/DEMUX, ODF and attenuators Every passive element must be counted.
Engineering margin Ageing, repairs, temperature and measurement reserve Margin separates design from fragile operation.
Measured baseline OTDR/insertion-loss and optical-power readings Field evidence validates the model.
02 / Engineering comparison

Compare on measurable engineering criteria

Calculate a receiver window, then verify it with field measurements.

01

Worst-case low

P_RX,min = P_TX,min − L_max − margin.

02

Worst-case high

P_RX,max = P_TX,max − L_min.

03

Sensitivity margin

Compare low case with the required receiver threshold.

04

Overload margin

Compare high case with receiver overload and attenuator need.

05

Measurement reconciliation

Explain differences between calculated and measured power.

03 / Product anchors

Live product examples for a controlled starting point

These live SKUs anchor the physical family. Suitability still depends on the documented host, fibre path and validation scope.

A product page is a starting specification, not universal compatibility or lot-acceptance evidence.

04 / Decision patterns

Choose by evidence, not shorthand

A link passes only when both edges of the receiver window close.

Preferred path

Approve when low- and high-power cases both retain the defined margin and field readings reconcile with the loss inventory.

Conditional path

Use engineered attenuation or reduced connector loss only when the revised BOM, values and acceptance test are documented.

Stop and redesign

Stop when typical transmitter power, estimated route length or uncounted passive devices substitute for worst-case data.

Revalidation trigger

Recalculate any optic, wavelength, route, connector, splice, passive device, temperature or margin-policy change.

05 / Validation path

From requirement lock to approved order line

Compare calculated values with cleaned-connector bench and installed-link measurements.

  1. 1

    Freeze the requirement

Record the exact host, port, data rate, reach, fibre path and commercial scope for Optical link budget.

  2. 2

    Compare complete architectures

Include optics, fibre, connectors, power, cooling, software and operational constraints—not only unit price.

  3. 3

    Define measurable acceptance

Set loss, telemetry, link, error, traffic and documentation criteria before selecting the sample.

  4. 4

    Validate the named configuration

Test the serialized sample on the recorded setup and close deviations with an owner and deadline.

  5. 5

    Bridge approval to production

Match the approved identity, revision, coding and critical attributes to the production lot and repeat order.

06 / Risk control

Failure modes that invalidate the decision

Typical-value design

Typical power hides worst-case failure.

Missing passives

Panels, cassettes or MUX loss are omitted.

One-sided budget

Sensitivity is checked but overload is not.

No reconciliation

Field readings differ without investigation.

08 / Buyer questions

Guide-specific questions

What does this guide decide?

The calculation applies only to the recorded optic limits, wavelength, fibre route, passive inventory, temperature assumptions and margin policy.

What must the buyer provide?

Provide optic min/max limits, receiver thresholds, wavelength, route length, measured loss, full passive inventory and margin policy.

When is the preferred path conditional?

Use engineered attenuation or reduced connector loss only when the revised BOM, values and acceptance test are documented.

What must be revalidated?

Recalculate any optic, wavelength, route, connector, splice, passive device, temperature or margin-policy change.

Controlled next step

Calculate both ends of the receiver window.

Send the optic limits and complete loss inventory for a reviewable link-budget worksheet.
