Commercial overview

DAC and AOC are installed-link assemblies, not generic cables

DAC and AOC buying starts with both host ports, speed, form factor, lane map, FEC and the physical rack path. Passive DAC, active DAC and AOC use different electrical or optical designs, power, reach, cable diameter and handling. A length that fits on a drawing may still fail operationally because of bend radius, routing, airflow or service access.

Breakout assemblies add another control layer. The parent port mode, lane assignment, each child connector, child-host support and labelling must be approved as one assembly. Replacing only one end or changing the lane map can invalidate the earlier result even when the nominal speed remains unchanged.

MingApex coordinates named DAC/AOC assemblies with host-specific identity and order-linked evidence. Exact lengths, connector ends, source, compatibility, MOQ and timing are confirmed for the written RFQ. A successful assembly is not generalised to every host pair or rack route.

Decision matrix

Assembly decisions to lock before ordering DAC or AOC

Keep unknown values visible. The selected product should follow the complete link and operating requirement, not a headline specification.

Supply options

Supply options

01

Passive and active DAC

Compare signal boundary, host support, length, cable bulk, power and rack serviceability.

02

AOC for longer rack paths

Use AOC where reach, cable weight and handling fit, while retaining host identity and optical-assembly protection.

Review this route
03

Breakout assemblies

Control the parent port, lane map, child connectors, labels and all peer devices as one assembly.

Buyer scenarios

Buyer scenarios

Top-of-rack server links

Short server links may favour passive DAC, but port support, cable bulk, airflow and service loops must be checked at full rack density.

Cross-row AOC path

AOC can simplify a longer path, but connector protection, pull route, slack storage and replacement access should be approved before production lengths are fixed.

400G-to-100G breakout

The parent switch, four child peers, lane order, FEC, labels and spare strategy must be released together. A drawing should let receiving and operations verify the assembly without private correspondence.

Controlled workflow

Controlled workflow

  1. 01 · Define the installation

Record both host ports, software/FEC, assembly topology, measured path, length and installation constraints.

  2. 02 · Engineer the boundary

Separate mandatory values, allowed tolerances and buyer-owned unknowns. Show every proposed deviation before selection.

  3. 03 · Approve a representative unit

Use the named host, route or assembly and an agreed method. Retain failed observations and limitations together with passing results.

  4. 04 · Release the order scope

Connect configuration, quantity, labels, source, evidence, packing and accepted deviations to the final quotation and purchase-order lines.

  5. 05 · Preserve for operation

Store a repeatable receiving or field check and define the source, component, route or document changes that require notice and review.

Evidence and release control

Evidence and release control

Controlled requirement

The record identifies the exact host pair, length and assembly drawing, assumptions, tolerances and open questions used for selection.

Representative approval

Sample or field evidence identifies the configuration, date, method, equipment/host, result and limitations used for release.

Receiving traceability

Lot or serial identity, quantity, labels, packing and visible inspection checks connect delivered items to the approved record.

Change and deviation log

Every accepted deviation and future change trigger has a consequence, owner, expiry and defined review action.

Commercial planning

Commercial planning

Compare price only after the technical installation and evidence boundary are aligned. The cost can change materially with assembly type, two-end coding, exact length, breakout, cable construction, labels and packing; the quotation should show what is included instead of hiding scope differences in one unit price.

MOQ and timing are confirmed by line. Separate sample or drawing approval, component preparation, production, inspection and transport. A specialised low-volume line can control a mixed order even when total quantity is high.

The commercial scope should state currency, Incoterm, payment, sample cost, quantity, allowed alternatives, delivery model, evidence, inspection responsibility, warranty/RMA route and change-notice expectation.

Before award, separate confirmed facts, supplier statements, engineering assumptions, accepted deviations and items that still require buyer validation. Connect the same decision revision to quotation and purchase order.

Any material change to the installation, host, route, assembly, channel, source, component or delivery target should reopen the affected decision rows. Earlier approval is not automatically future-proof.

Procurement questions

Procurement questions

What is required to start the review?

Provide both hosts and ports, software/FEC, assembly type, measured route, exact length, breakout/lane map, quantity, labels and installation constraints.

Does the category label prove project suitability?

No. The label describes one characteristic. Suitability depends on the complete named installation, host, route or assembly and the agreed acceptance evidence.

When is a representative sample needed?

Use a sample when the host, environment, route, assembly, source or configuration is new, or when field-failure consequences justify validation. Agree the test and acceptance boundary first.

Can an alternative be substituted after approval?

Only when the affected technical, evidence and commercial rows are reviewed and the alternative is accepted in writing. Silent substitution is not an approved change process.

Are stock, MOQ and timing fixed?

No. Exact configuration, source, availability, MOQ, sample or engineering work, production, evidence and delivery timing are confirmed in the written quotation for the named requirement.
